It Has Drama

It has drama - featuring changes, discoveries, and suspense; it strives at exploring the art of performing and the body; it also tries to involve and interact with the audience. As the actor says in the program, it attempts to investigate how to perform Genet's The Balcony in a self-conscious and presentational manner. It manages to emanate to a certain extent the tension of the sexual metaphors in Genet's play. The lighting effects and visual imagery are stunning at times - e.g. in one scene red wine is poured on the actor's hands and flows onto the scattered white sugar on top of a glass table. The actor and actress try very hard and their enthusiasm is felt by the audience. With more professional polish and better timing in delivery and acting, the program could be transformed into a first-rate production because it has drive, energy and creative imagination.This also shows that one does not need to be boring to be avant-garde.
